And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
— John 1:14-16

The Witch-Hunt Culture

By Sir Roger Scruton
From BBC Sounds
1 ScrutonEnglish philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, in this broadcast of A Point of View, from BBC Radio, argues that "political correctness, far from being the cure to our conflicts, is actually the ultimate source of them. The 'isms' and 'phobias,'" he says, have been used in order to "put some complex matters beyond discussion, so that only one perspective can be publicly confessed to... In the world of political correctness", he suggests, "there is no presumption of innocence, but only a hunger for targets."

What is Jesus Worth?

By Justin Woyak
From ChristianUnion.org
In the last chapter of The Normal Christian Life, Watchman Nee reflects on the story in the Gospels (only a few days before Jesus dies on the cross) when Mary comes to a dinner uninvited, breaks an alabaster jar of ointment—worth a staggering amount—and anoints Jesus with the jar’s entire contents (Mark 14:3–9). Even the disciples were indignant and cried out, “Why this waste!” Judas’s voice may have been the loudest among the disciples (John 12:4–6), but he was not alone...

John the Baptist Points to the Real Hope of Advent

By Fleming Rutledge
From Christianity Today
3 RutledgeIt would be hard to say which is more alien to our contemporary ideas of getting ready for Christmas, the season of Advent or the figure of John the Baptist—the man who greeted the Pharisees and Sadducees by calling them a “brood of vipers” (Matt. 3:7, ESV throughout). How would you like to get that on a Christmas card?

This unlovable figure is very much out of sync with our times, yet he is one of the foremost figures of Advent, at least...

A Powerful Lesson as We Remember President Bush

By Cal Thomas
From The Orlando Sentinel

The scene at the U.S. Capitol on Monday as former President George H.W. Bush lay in state presented a tableau and a lesson for those who seek earthly power and believe it can change things.

As TV cameras panned the crowd, I was struck by how many aging "formers" there were, men (and they were mostly men) who once held high office, but now live in...

Ambassadors of Reconciliation

By Catherine Elvy
From Christian Union: The Magazine
5 cu citiesDrew Griffin, the managing editor of Providence: A Journal of Christianity & American Foreign Policy, highlighted the critical role believers play in fostering redemption, reconciliation, and transformation within their spheres of influence when he appeared at a Christian Union New York forum this summer. Griffin moderated a panel of non-profit leaders who took part in an event entitled Mission to the City: Engaging through Volunteering. “Christians are supposed to be an aroma of life and light to their communities,” said Griffin...

What Should Be the Goal of the Pro-Life Movement?

By Roland C. Warren
From Care-Net.org

With the recent confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, one of the most common questions I am getting in my work at Care Net is, “What is the goal of the pro-life movement?” This a critical question because pursuing the wrong goal can lead to dire consequences for any movement. The most common answer I’ve heard ...

Prayer Requests

UNIVERSITY MINISTRIES
Please pray for the students and faculty who are part of Christian Union's university ministries as the fall term begins to wind down at most of their schools. Pray for strength to wrap up this semester of ministry well, and for God to move powerfully through spiritual conversations that occur on campus as we move closer to Christmas.

CITY MINISTRIES
We've had three salons in the past three weeks in New York and DC. We praise God for those conversations that challenged those in attendance in how we live and are to be the church in these cities at this time. Please continue to pray that each of us will engage well in our work and communities as we live and present the Gospel.

DAY & NIGHT

Pray for the upcoming Ten-Day Fast to start 2019. Pray that many Christians across America will want to seek God’s presence for our nation through fasting and prayer, January 7-16, 2019. Please join us and sign up now for the fast.
