Christian Union Connects Leaders in a New City

Washington DC Hosts First Annual Reception and NYC Hosts First Worship Night

by erin conner, writer and communications associate

On a warm October evening in Arlington, VA, close to two dozen people gathered to attend Christian Union's first annual Washington, DC reception. This reception included a meet and greet for attendees to connect with other Christian Union alumni and friends of the ministry. It also hosted Carrie Sheffield, a nationally renowned columnist and broadcaster, as the guest speaker to share an overview of her recently published memoir, Motorhome Prophecies. Sheffield, a Harvard alumna and member of Christian Union America, will be serving in an advisory role for the Christian Union Washington, DC Board of Advisors.

Seeking the Lord in Cities: From Santiago to DC

Alumni Spotlight: Sarah Deonarain, Harvard Class of 2023

by erin conner, writer and communications associate

"Something holy was there," said Sarah Deonarain about her first visit to Christian Union's Leadership Lecture Series at Harvard called Doxa. "Peaceful, genuine communities coming together to worship God in the middle of campus created a beautiful space… something I had not experienced before." Deonarain grew very attached to this space over her undergraduate career at Harvard.

Her journey to how she got to Christian Union testifies to the fact that God provides us with the people, places, and things we need to grow close to Him if we are willing to see and say "yes." Deonarain admits at first she didn't, saying "no" several times to an invitation to come and experience Christian community. Like many students, she admitted to being swept up in the busyness of the culture, but when change was needed, she said yes to a persistent and faith-filled friend who warmly invited her time and time again.

The Walls are Crumbling at Harvard

But God's Remnant Stands Firm, Deeply Rooted in His Promises

by sadie sasser, ministry fellow at christian union gloria at harvard

The heart of Harvard’s undergraduate campus is called Harvard Yard. Many of the academic lecture halls are situated here, as well as all the first-year student dorms. Here, the towering trees hide the ground from sunlight and old brick buildings reflect the campus's age. And, of course, the entire yard is enclosed by red brick walls.

harvard yard

I recently started reading through the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s call comes early in the book-the first chapter is dedicated to it! I was truly struck by what I read there. God says to Jeremiah that in the place of the fortified city of Jerusalem, who had forsaken the ways of God and would be judged through exile, He would replace Jerusalem with Jeremiah.

"And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, declares the Lord, to deliver you."

A place that was once dedicated to the Lord and tasked with extending His reign and glory to all had come to forsake and turn against Him. So, Almighty God instated Jeremiah to be himself the fortified city, a person with whom God would dwell and who would speak the words of God. And God is doing the very same thing at Harvard with students in Christian Union Gloria. This university was once committed to training ministers in “Truth for Christ and the Church.” It has abandoned its station, but God is raising up students at this very university to continue the mission once given to Harvard students at large. The walls of Harvard have crumbled, but the walls of God’s people remain strong.

How does a group of forty or so students impact a campus of over seven thousand? The math doesn’t seem to add up, especially considering the turnover that is inherent in the four years of university. Scripture, however, tells us a different story.

Throughout the metanarrative, a remnant continues. There are those who remain faithful to the Lord and continue to follow Him despite cultural circumstances. Experience also tells us a different story. Before God opened the door for me to serve at CU Gloria, I had been a student at Asbury Seminary and was employed there during February 2023, when the “outpouring” (as they called it) occurred. In times of revival, we look for signs of faithfulness in seeking God that help determine what is an authentic move of the Spirit and what is not. And there had been a steady group of people praying together for revival to visit Wilmore again for many years. The renewing and worshipful experience I had in Hughes Auditorium is a testament to the work of the few, who fortified themselves to see a work of God and brought over fifty-thousand people to experience His glory.

Jeremiah 1 states, “And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 'Jeremiah, what do you see?' And I said, 'I see an almond branch.' Then the Lord said to me, 'You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.'” This beautiful word play in Hebrew uses the similar sounds of “almond” (šāqēḏ) and “watching” (šāqaḏ) to show Jeremiah that whatever God gives Him to do or say, it is God Himself who accomplishes it.

God Himself will fortify Him as a city for His glory, and when Jeremiah experiences conflict, the presence of God will not allow the conflict to cause him to crumble.

The students and faculty of CU Gloria take the almond branch and the fortified city as promises to Harvard in this season- the promises that God will continue to make our students into strong forces that proclaim His glory in the midst of a place that has abandoned Him and that God Himself will watch over His promises to make them come to pass.

The Revolutionary Power of Christian Retreats

One Student Ministry's Unstoppable Heart to See God Transform Lives

by Erin conner, writer & communications associate

It's not easy or convenient to plan a weekend away. It is much easier to choose not to disrupt the pattern of life and to stay within the confines of routine. Disruption is not easy for anyone, but it is especially difficult for Ivy League students. Their rigorous academic schedules are full of the demands and pressures of achievement at the highest level, so stepping away from it all during the school year is nothing short of revolutionary.

Stepping away to retreat with the Lord and with each other is a beautiful gateway into the freedom Christ came to give--freedom, in part, from the weight of the standards, values, and identity placed upon us by the world. The students of Christian Union are learning to live in this kind of freedom, and, as a result, they are sharing it with others.

Each year, hundreds of students, who are a part of Christian Union's leadership development ministry at ten of our nation's most secular and influential educational institutions, step away from it all to attend fall, winter, and/or spring retreats. They do this to be in the presence of God and to recenter their lives on Christ and His values. Insodoing, they are declaring that their identity is not found in their achievement or status (or anything else of this world,) but is found in Christ alone.

Yoska Guta, a '26 student at Yale University and a member of CU Lux 's ministry, has attended many Christian Union student retreats.

Most recently, she and 75 other Yale students attended a fall retreat at Douglas Camp Meeting in Massachusetts, a retreat center established in 1875 to worship God in the splendor of His holiness. David Blaney, the president of Douglas Camp Meeting shared, "We were more than blessed to host Christian Union. Christian Union's hunger and thirst for more of Jesus was inspiring! There is hope for the next generation as we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness."

Douglas Camp Meeting has hosted many significant Christian leaders over the last 149 years, including Second Great Awakening revivalist, Charles Finney.

Jeff Walsh, ministry director of Christian Union Lux, said, "It is amazing to know that just before Finney went on to be with the Lord that he preached from this very stage. And yet today God has continued to keep a remnant of believers worshiping his name, crying out yet again for God to do a work in New England among this generation from the very same place."

Another notable retreat held by Christian Union in 2024 entitled "CU Proclaim" was held at Cornell during spring break in March and hosted students from Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth, and Columbia. At this retreat, students held an evangelical worship event at Sage Chapel, during which many attendees accepted salvation in Christ, found freedom from afflictions, and came forward to confess their need for God's help and healing in their lives.

Regardless of the specifics of the retreat, students always leave them carrying the demonstrative love of Christ back to their communities. To illustrate, last semester, Christian Union students shared the gospel 46,654 times and held 601 evangelistic conversations with their peers across the campuses where CU serves.

This past April, CU Lux at Yale partnered with other Christian organizations to host an outdoor Worldwide Prayer Meeting entitled "Rekindle" held in the heart of their New Haven, Connecticut, campus. This event hosted 500 people in person and invited more than 100,000 people around the globe to submit prayer requests and join the live stream to proclaim and exalt the name of Jesus Christ.

In addition, this past spring, Christian Union students at Stanford partnered with other Christian organizations to lead an outdoor worship event entitled "One" with Francis Chan in the heart of their Palo Alto, California, campus.

From the New England region to the west coast of the US, Christian Union retreats are transforming students' lives and the communities in which they live.

When reflecting on the opportunity to be a part of such a strong Christian community, Guta shared,  "I’m tremendously grateful for and blessed by the way God has brought this group of people together–each member belonging to all the others for the benefit of each other and for the glory of God."

Retreats are truly revolutionary, holding the power to transform and equip believers to impact eternity with the gospel of Christ.

Student Leaders Focus on Freshmen and Faith

Reaching Freshmen at Our Nation's Most Secular Schools with the Love of Christ

by Erin conner, writer & communications associate

Student leaders at Christian Union such as Foster Cardinale and Teddy Taylor, seniors at Cornell University, are generously and joyfully giving their time and effort to warmly welcome the incoming class of students on their campus. Cardinale and Taylor were both involved in Christian Union Bible Courses last year and will be leading freshman Bible Courses this upcoming academic year. Both had the idea to take pizzas to the freshman quad during the first week of classes, as Cornell's dining staff members were on strike and students were only being served bagged meals. Both are selflessly serving others as higher than themselves.

Bible Course Testimonies Pour In

The Power of Studying Scripture Revealed in Students' Lives

by erin conner, writer and communications associate

"It has honestly kept me alive. I think if I never had this spot to go to while being on this challenging campus, I would not be here. Literally," wrote one Columbia University student in response to a question on an end of year survey about Christian Union's Bible courses. The "spot" this student is referring to is CU's Ministry Center at Columbia located just blocks from campus where several CU Bible Courses are held each semester.

This response and many others came pouring in as part of an end-of-year reflection given to students involved in Christian Union's Bible courses at Dartmouth, Brown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Cornell, and Stanford. In 2023, 387 students were enrolled in Bible courses across all of Christian Union Universities' ministries.

The following is a compilation of several testimonies shared by students at Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, and Cornell about the power of being in a men's or women's Christian Union Bible Course in the spring of 2024:

Peace and Life Found at Harvard

A Glimpse into the Power of a Christian Union Bible Course

by erin conner, writer and communications associate

On the first day of one of Christian Union Gloria's Bible courses this spring, one young man began to believe that this "God thing" might be for him. He asked CU Gloria's ministry fellow, Jim Galvin, "Could there be more to my faith than what I have seen so far?"  In that moment, Galvin set out on a journey of one-on-one discipleship with this young man. This student and this ministry fellow began to intentionally seek God wholeheartedly for the remainder of this spring semester together. Through one-on-one mentoring, in part, this student began to grow in the Lord. He intentionally walked away from many college campus temptations to be "of the world," while a deep longing to share his faith with others grew within him.

What is Christian Union?

A Ministry that Equips Tranformative Christian Leaders for Life

By Erin conner, writer and communications associate

Christian Union has been in the national spotlight for several weeks now. From magazine and newspaper articles, television interviews, a podcast appearance, a Worldwide Prayer Meeting at Yale with the Summit International School of Ministry that was live-streamed across multiple countries, and social media ads running from the west to the east coast of the U.S., many people in faith-based circles are asking, "What is Christian Union?"

Christian Union is a leadership development ministry that works at ten of the nation's most influential educational institutions and beyond to develop and connect Christians to transform culture for God's glory.

Christian Union (CU) is a unique ministry in that it meets a comprehensive set of needs in our nation's young adults:

Nothing is More Loving

Sharing Christ with an "Unreached People Group" at Cornell and Beyond

By Erin conner, writer and communications associate

While students and faculty were protesting in Ithaca's public spaces and headlines were raging with anger and allegations about attacks on freedom in The Cornell's Daily Sun, Christian Union (CU) Vita students were fixing their eyes on the Author and Finisher of their faith. These students recently surrendered their week of spring break to serve the Lord. They are not looking to the right or to the left; instead, they are gazing upon the beauty of the Lord, knowing He is the One who sustains them and keeps them from sinking into the surrounding culture of despair, as they share the Hope that they have in Jesus Christ with anyone who will listen.

Jesus Disrupts: 2024 Evangelism Campaign

CU Rise Set to "Disrupt" Spiritual Climate of U.S. Colleges

By erin conner, writer and communications associate

In 2022, Christian Union first launched CU Rise, an evangelism campaign designed to share the gospel with students at nine of the nation’s most influential universities more boldly, strategically, and frequently than ever before. This month, Christian Union is at it again, as CU Rise takes form for the third spring in a row with its campaign entitled "Jesus Disrupts."

For eight weeks, starting March 17, the goal of CU Rise is to proclaim the gospel, disrupting the current spiritual climate at highly secular universities that produce a disproportionate amount of U.S. and global leaders. Matt Bennett, Founder and President of Christian Union, recently told the Christian Post that this theme was chosen “to introduce students to how radical Jesus is.”

The schools across the country that this campaign will focus on include Brown University of Rhode Island, Columbia University of New York, Cornell University of New York, Dartmouth College of New Hampshire, Harvard University of Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University of New Jersey, Yale University of Connecticut, and Stanford University of California.

“Students today at the nation’s most rigorous schools are largely unaware of the most important message in the history of humanity. Jesus Christ has brought more good into the world than any other person, and these students deserve to know, said Bennett. "Jesus is also the only one who can forgive sins and transfer us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. We need to do everything we can to give these students the opportunity to believe in Him.”

Christian Leadership in Media

Highlight: CU America Member, Carrie Sheffield

By erin conner, writer and communications associate

Carrie Sheffield, a Harvard alumna and a member of Christian Union America, is releasing a memoir this March entitled Motorhome Prophesies and launching a subsequent book tour across the U.S.

Sheffield, a columnist and broadcaster in Washington, D.C., shares insights with millions of Americans on networks like CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, CBS News, CNBC, BBC, and more. From ABC’s Good Morning America to HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, PBS, and C-SPAN, she brings a voice of virtue to the American communications and media industry through boundless interviews for articles, appearances on television shows and podcasts, and at forums across the nation. Consequently, many Americans know the professional side of Carrie Sheffield's life.

In her memoir, we learn about a different side of her life. The book's overview states, "Carrie Sheffield grew up the fifth of eight children with a violent, mentally ill, street-musician father who believed he was a modern-day Mormon prophet…She and her seven siblings were often forced to live as vagabonds, remaining on the move across the country. They frequently subsisted in sheds, tents, and, most notably, motorhomes. They often lived a dysfunctional drifter existence, camping out in their motorhome in Walmart parking lots. Carrie attended 17 public schools and homeschool, all while performing classical music on the streets… at times while child custody workers loomed…Carrie struggled with her mental health during college and for most of her adult life."

Mentoring Unites Grads Across the Globe

Christian Union Provides Support for Alumni

By Erin conner, writer and communications associate

Tiffany Agyarko, a civil engineer and Princeton alumna, had many new aspects of life to manage when she graduated in May 2023. In the course of just a few weeks, Agyarko had packed up her life as a university student in New Jersey to move to Houston, Texas, to immediately begin her career.

The one area of her new life that she did not need to invest time and energy into researching was the area of spiritual mentorship. Christian Union had provided this small yet meaningful anchor for her when she relocated. Moving to an entirely new city, sometimes even to a new country, to build a professional life and find a supportive, like-minded community of faith can be daunting. With this in mind, Christian Union established its mentoring program to help ease the post graduation transition.

Abide in Me

Harvard Students Dwell in Christ and in Community

By sadie sasser, ministry fellow at Christian union gloria

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.  “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."  -John 15: 1-5

Christian Union Gloria at Harvard is dwelling in the words of John 15 and in a newly furnished space near campus. Earlier in this academic year, as we leaned into this passage during our “Doxa” Leadership Lecture Series, it became apparent that, as with one’s personal devotional life, there are times in communities when a call to recenter at the feet of Jesus– to rest and abide in the True Vine– is the most important call. And as we have heard the call to rest and recenter, we have also felt the holy discomfort to lay down our entire lives and let the Lord do what He will, even if it involves pruning.

At CU Gloria, God is helping us to see more clearly what it means to bear fruit and let Him take the lead; and God has led us to abide with Christ together in community.

For Such a Time as This

A Devotional to Prepare Our Hearts for a New Year

By Dr. Marcus Buckley, Ministry Director at Christian Union Vita at Cornell

"And they told Mordecai what Esther had said. Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, “Do not think to yourself that in the king’s palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews. For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”  Mordecai then went away and did everything as Esther had ordered him." -Esther 4:12-17

Repent, for the Kingdom of God is Near

A Closer Look at Jesus' Call to Repentance

By Erin Conner

Repentance is a beautiful word. It is the name of the road that leads out of darkness. It is the name of the road that leads to life. It is a Biblical concept that, depending on the type of church we grew up in or currently attend, may seem harsh, foreign, or antiquated. As a true follower of God, deep and ongoing repentance, the act of turning away from sin to wholeheartedly following the Lord, is a life-giving spiritual discipline.

From a deep immersion into Scripture, we find that God never intended for repentance to be a spiritual discipline of the past. God never intended for his people to ignore His commands. In fact, Christ said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) He never intended His people to be “of the world,” obeying the world’s “commands” while neglecting His. (Romans 12:2) We find God never intended self-worship (or any other form of idolatry) to co-exist with the worship of God. From a deep immersion into Scripture, we also find that God never intended for people to go through the motions of repentance without a contrite heart.

“It was the fall that saved my life,” Erika Lamara Garrett explained. In January of 2020, at the age of 33, Garrett fell. The injuries she sustained from this fall confined her to a bed and made her dependent on others to perform basic daily activities. Despite the desperation of her circumstances while on bed rest, she sensed the Lord telling her, “Erika- you will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

Are the Miraculous Gifts for Today?

The Debate of Cessationism v. Continuationism

By erin conner

Are the miraculous gifts for today? Dr. Michael Brown argues a compelling “yes” in his article entitled “The Reformed of the Lord Say No to Cessationism,” published on October 9 in Christianity Today.

“The cessationist debate is back, although in some ways, it’s never left,” Brown writes, in light of the recently scheduled 2024 Cessationist Conference led, in part, by Pastor John MacArthur. This conference is timed to coincide with the release of the Cessationist movie, “bringing an age-old topic back to the forefront of trending conversations, especially among Reformed believers.”

Only Jesus Satisfies

The 2023 CU Rise Campaign

By erin conner

From deeply rigorous Bible courses, intellectually engaging lecture speakers, vibrant worship and prayer events, experienced and Spirit-led faculty, powerful one-on-one discipleship, to leadership training and development, Christian Union's university ministry has much to offer Christian students at the schools where they serve. These ministry programs are deepening the faith of the students involved, but also equipping them to lead others toward life in Christ.

The 2023 CU Rise Campaign is just one example of this.
