Aimee Joseph Presents a Biblical Paradigm

Decisions, decisions, decisions. We live in an era in which we have more choices than ever before. From which restaurant to visit, to what preschool is best for our kids, to which college degree we should pursue—we have never been more inundated with choices.

But this seeming freedom, to choose our own adventure every day, can also become a burden. It can be overwhelming to make so many decisions. We can quickly grow anxious about making a bad decision or the wrong choice that might impact our life forever. As Soren Kierkegaard says, “Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.”

This talk from the Gospel Coalition Conference 2021 by Aimee Joseph digs into the problem of decision making, a biblical paradigm for making decisions, the process and preparation for making a decision, and the posture of making a choice.

Joseph wants to demystify discerning the Lord’s will and voice. It is all too easy to allow ourselves to become burdened with decisions and act in fear rather than in faith, but Joseph lays out a biblical perspective of how God has given us the privilege of making decisions. Though God is sovereign, He has made us responsible moral agents who have the ability to choose. This gift is something we must learn to wield with humility, prayer, and praise.

As a ministry that works primarily with college students, Christian Union ministry faculty come face to face with the anxiety of decision-making that students face as they navigate college, choose majors, who to date, which friend groups to hang out with, and how to prioritize their faith in the midst of it all. By God’s grace, students in Christian Union ministries are growing in their ability to discern God’s will for their lives and make decisions that bring Him glory.
