Dear Prayer Partners,

Our family just moved across town. To be sure, moving is a result of the fall (Adam and Eve had to move out of the Garden), and my back attests to that spiritual reality. However, there is something good about moving to a new(ish) home. Besides being bigger and cheaper, there is the clean house, the opportunities to purge (a lot of) unneeded stuff, and the new perspective that our new lodgings affords us.

“We will not neglect the house of our God.”  Nehemiah 10:39

After returning from exile in Babylon, Ezra and the priests gather the Israelites together in a great corporate assembly to renew their covenant with God.  In his prayer, Ezra carefully pronounces how each offering, tithe, and “first fruit” of dough, oil, wine, etc. is to be brought accordingly into the house of God.  As Ezra prays summarizing the Levitical instructions the Israelites have had for years, his recasting is so clear that you can practically “see” the disorder of their sinful ways atrophying and the good, pleasing order of flourishing provision, celebration, and thankfulness materializing before their eyes.

So I was out running the other day when a teenager rode up on a bike, stopped in front of me, and blurted out, “Do you know you look like Harrison Ford?”.  I was surprised, to say the least, but am also realistic enough to suspect he was thinking Harrison Ford circa “Call of the Wild”, rather than “Indiana Jones”.  I found myself gratified to be recognized (sort of), but I knew it wasn’t so.  I reflected later that the incident reminded me of that deep desire to be noticed and to be of consequence at some level.

Greetings from Hanover!

Unlike most colleges we are still in session and finishing Week 8.

Please pray for our seniors as their last few weeks as Dartmouth students draw to a close. We are saddened that we won't be able to properly say goodbye. Pray for them as they leave "campus," that they would be bold and faithful witnesses for Christ in their new communities.

Thank you for your continued prayers for the work on this campus and for New York City. The semester has officially ended, and students are waiting to hear back from the college regarding what classes will look like in the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. So many dreams have been put on pause due to this pandemic, but we are confident that God will continue to reveal His good purposes through this time. We are finding ourselves still connecting with a few students via online means for one-on-one discipleship and for studying scripture, which has been a blessing. Here are some ways you can be praying for us this month:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea
(Psalm 46:1-2)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The semester has just concluded for our students—and what a semester it has been! As others have said, we are very excited to get back to more normal times rather than “unprecedented” ones. Though it has been an unusual semester for us, God has remained the same and has continued to be “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” as the Psalmist declares. What a joy it is to know God is constant, even when everything else appears to be in disarray.

Socially distant greetings from Palo Alto!

As most of us continue our stay-at-home daily rhythms, our students are wrapping up this very unusual Spring quarter with their final projects, papers, and examinations. Certainly, while no one could have anticipated what this year would be like, I think back to my prayers in the fall as we stepped into this academic year. I had prayed that our students, as well as our ministry team, would hear from God in new and fresh ways. It’s fair to say that prayer has been answered! There have for sure been some heartbreaks along the way, but as I interact through video conferencing with our Stanford students, generally I find hopeful faces looking back at me. I remain encouraged by how they have faced this challenge, and continue to see God actively speaking into their lives.

Dear Prayer Partners of CU Martus,

“Morale is low…mutiny is imminent.” Those are words that might have been penned during Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition, or by sailors circumnavigating the globe during a scurvy outbreak. Or they might be the words of families and individuals after having been quarantined for weeks during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Greetings Friends,

I love the long New England spring and earliest glimpses of summer, complete with vivid green grass and blue skies. These annual transformations flood our senses and happen right on cue per God’s decree each May. This year, however, we missed seeing one of the most satisfying transformations of all—the procession of graduates flowing through Phelps Gate into old campus on Monday, May 18th. We know they celebrated uniquely in each of their homes, but the caps, gowns, and sweet smiles of victory and triumph are always a joy to see!

Today I had a staring contest with my dog. It’s what happens after weeks and months in a small New York apartment with the rest of my family. I’m pretty sure it was that last Zoom call that put me over.

My thinking seems increasingly flat (clearly), but in the midst of this I nonetheless find Ephesians 3:20 to be an encouragement - because it pulls my imagination beyond my immediate circumstances toward what might be, or will be.

Greetings,

As we conclude Week Four of the spring term here at Dartmouth we are thankful for the ways that God is working in spite of our students not being on campus. We are seeing strong Bible Course attendance, new students joining our BCs, students stepping up to lead worship, create devotions, and care for each other.

For the past month, the students and faculty have been living through a new norm as all classroom instruction and ministry interactions have been moved online. The students are finishing up the final week of classes and getting ready for final exams. NYC has been getting some positive news with the number of COVID-19 cases going down, but there are still a lot of unknowns. In the midst of unknowns, we continue to hold on to God and the truth that He is still in control. We are seeking the Lord for His wisdom and direction for Christian Union Lumine at Columbia University. Thank you for your continued prayers for the work on this campus. Here are ways you can be praying for us this month:
